Originally written as a pilot show entitled Insomnia Cafe by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, Friends was broadcast for ten successful seasons by NBC. It reigned as the most popular situation comedy during its ten-year run, from 1994 - 2004, and won six Emmy awards.

The series follows the relationships between the six friends as well as their relationships with others. Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) leaves her fiance on their wedding day and begins life in Manhattan as a waitress at the popular coffee house, Central Perk, the gathering spot for the six friends. Monica Geller (Courteney Cox-Arquette), is Rachel's best high school friend, and the two share Monica's aunt's Manhattan apartment. Overly organized and competitive, Monica works as a chef, and is the sister of paleontologist Ross Geller (David Schwimmer), Rachel's on-again, off-again love interest. Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) is a street-wise, but somewhat naive, musician and masseuse. Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) is a ladies' man and actor, and Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) is a business executive known for his dry wit and sarcasm.
